I have been following this anime for awhile now. It reminds me of Mahou Sensei Negima for several reasons, but I even like it better.
Gakuen is Japanese for campus, whereas an "alice" is a special power that somebody possesses. In other words: gakuen alice is a campus that consists of people with a special ability. Kids in this case.
The anime focuses on Mikan, a little girl that winds up in this special campus because she was tracking one of her best friends (Hotaru, a girl that has an invention alice and therefore can invent a whole number of wacky devices).
If you look this anime up in the Animenfo database you'll notice it's not that well known but rated high by those who reviewed it.
