Here are some of my thoughts:
First of all, the pre rendered bg's work pretty well with the character sprites in most missions. (but look completely horrible in a couple) The unique character abilities, along with the ability to carry two weapons really doesn't effect the gameplay much and the new attack moves are useless imo. (of course they look cool and can be used to earn points though)
When it comes to the gameplay it resembles MS 3 with large enemies that take a long time to kill to the point that it can get tedious. (giant crabs... fun..?) It's possibly the most challenging metal slug i've ever played, (or maybe i'm too used to play MS games on a keyboard) which i admire, but the level designs came off as being flat and unoriginal. (and not because of the rehashed sprites) Most of the bosses battles where very fun and challenging but too streched out imo. If it wasn't for MS 5 i'd say this installment has the most drab and boring final boss yet. Also, I feel disappointed in the uncreative level design that gets increasingly worse through the game. (There is a drill slug in this game and it's section is the worst section i've played in a MS)
My fav. section is probably the horizonal flying section which reminds me very much of a Gradius level.
I've only played it on hard mode so far. In the options menu there is a 1-8 setting of difficulty from the arcade but before starting the character select screen they implemented more difficulty options. (odd)

I agree with pretty much everything you said Goemon, although I have not had enough chance to play the game due to emo_fairy's monopolisation of my PS2 due to her Kingdom Hearts 2 addiction . She's away this weekend, so the one good thing about that is that I'll get some time to sit down and play the game a bit more . The ability to carry two weapons/the special moves/differing character abilities are exactly what I wanted to see in a Slug game, but you're right they don't make a massive amount of difference to the gameply really, as they could have been much better implemented. I must admit that I probably enjoyed my first run through MS5 for the first time more than my first run through MS6, but the game is growing on me and I'd say it is better overall than 5. It's a shame that they didn't stick with the hi-tech look of that game though, as it looked good in my opinion and definitely a bit fresher than the same soldiers we have been slaughtering since MS1... I've got nothing but good things to say about this game. I finished one run through it so I still haven't been gone through every route yet. The bonus galleries are great and the combat school seems like a fun challenge(the new girls are cute ;D). Heres a pretty good faq with lots of unintentional engrish in it. db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/metal_slug_6_ps2_a.txt

I'm glad to hear that you like MS 6 Raiken. We are in dire need of more MS 6 discussion!
I just played the game for the first time in almost 2 weeks. I still can't beat the third mission without dying but i'm workin on it.

Honestly I think my only gripes with this game are still no Nadia or Trevor and the fact that they removed the slide. That really sucks cause later in the game I find myself often getting killed in situations where I could have saved myself with the slide.

HOLY CHRISTWAGONS!
I've been to a gamestop and got a look at the packaging for Metal Slug Anthology for the Wii, and get this, it includes Metal Slug 6!! That about sealed the deal for me on the Wii, I don't know if MS 6 will be included in the PSP port though.

I honestly think it helps to avoid getting the slug on screen during that fight although you might be able to abuse the invincibility you get when you leave a vehicle with it.

Question: Are the Xbox and Playstation 2 mini games for Metal Slug 3 included in Metal Slug Anthology? No. There are extra features unique to the collection though apparently. It got pushed back again to Dec 5 btw
