98 is best, IMO. 99/2K overcomplicated a simple game system with Strikers and Counter/Armour modes, 2k1 is fun in an "alternative" kind of way, and 2k2 is good but got bogged down with Hyper SDM moves that were too fiddly to perform in the heat of battle. 98 stuck to the basics and is pretty balanced, which is what makes it so great. It also has my favourite versions of Kyo and Blue Mary! My only gripe is that maybe there are too many "shoto" style characters in the game.

yeah, like Kyo's Jump-in combo... 89% is 4 seconds!! I AGREEhhaha, yeah KOF '95 is awesome, some of the best backgrounds in that one. You are right about some of the unbalanced parts though. KOF '94 is the same too - gotta love dizzying someone practically any time you land a hard combo that is more than 3 hits As for Eiji... "meh" to both of you ;D ;D ;D ;D Kaz

i think if you think aof2 is great youll love kof99 the gfx and( more importantly)the music really are tops ,gameplay is polished,kof95 is great too ,i myself am looking to 2003 although theyre all games with their own merit 2001 i think is underrated (im in a minority here )lol

2001 is decent gameplay wise (I know people that swear by it too), it's just a shame that they screwed up the look of the game so bad. Gameplay is always more important thn anything else, but the gfx really are an eyesore at times in that game (NASTY backgrounds), and then there's the small matter of the music... which makes my ears bleed most of the time. The PS2 version looks a little better, shame they didn't do at least *something* with the music though Kaz

2001 wasn't too bad, espcially given the fact that you didn't have to bother with strikers. but having said that, all the kof games from '99-2002 could have done with a lot more thought put into them. '99 and 2000 look gorgeous in some places but like an utter shambles in others. and its that inconsistency that gets me every time and makes me think snk wern't really sure what they were doing themselves in making those games.
as for the music issue kof '95 had the best, though i remember the music to the bali stage in '97 was quite groovy. but in general about 90% of the music i'll happily put up with in games is music that i'd otherwise never be caught dead listening to. the only exception being the soundtrack to castlevania: symphony of the night.

I happen to really like the 2001 techno music theme. The music in 2002 is so agitating I wish I could turn it off and just have sound effects. I felt it was a very innovative sound design and modern for once instead of the usual video game jamouts. Then again I listen to techno personally.
I've owned 95,96,98,99,2000,2001,2002
I like 2002 and 98 the best to play. My non-neo geo obsessed friends that come over to play on my mvs like 2002 and 2000.
Backgrounds in 2000 were my favorite, 2002 backgrounds are pretty poor in general.

Ok guys, thanks to your guidance I have managed to buy kof 98 on ebay. It's on it's way as we speak   I have read that there are some cheats for the game. One of the cheats is for characters of kof 95, does anyone know wich ones, or if the cheat even works? (is it Eiji...huh? is it? is it??) actually, there isnt much cheats '98, the only ones are the alternate versions of the chars and secret endings: *from gamefaqs.com 97' Boss Orochi Team Hold start on Chris,Yashiro, or Shermie to select their 97' Boss Orochi characters.
Alternate characters Simply hold START and select the character and you will be playing with an alternate version. The code works for the following characters: Kyo, Terry, Joe, Andy, Ryo, Robert, Billy.
Determine whether power stocks will go onto next character When you have to select the order of the characters, first hold START and a face will appear on each character. The colour of the face shows whether the power stocks will be conserved or whether you'll lose all of them when you control the next character. White normal face: the power stocks will get passed on Yellow smiling face: the power stocks will get passed on and you'll get one more too Red angry face: you'll lose all the power stocks You may then set up your team depending oh how your characters are feeling.
Play as the End Boss Omega Rugal (only in Console/AES) Hold start on normal Rugal.B to select the End Boss Omega Rugal.
Select your winning pose Immediately press a button after beating the opponent. Each button gives a different winning pose.
Special Ending Teams Finish the game with any of the following team to see a special ending :
- Andy, Benimaru, Robert - Billy, Chang, Joe - Chang, Chin, Choi - Chizuru, Iori, Kyo - Chris, Kensou, Shingo - Chris, Kyo, Saisyu - Chris, Yamazaki, Yashiro - Clark, Lucky, Terry - Goro, Joe, Yuri - Heidern, Leona, Ralf - Iori, Kyo, Shingo - Kim, Saisyu, Takuma - Kyo, Ryo, Terry - Kyo, Saisyu, Shingo - Mature, Rugal, Vice - Mature, Shermie, Vice - Ryo, Takuma, Yuri

I recieved it yesterday   My first impression...its ok. I shouldnt give an opinion untill I have played it for a few days (or weeks). Also very important is to play it against a friend I guess. Same as with aof2...I can understand why people dont like it or at least dont think its anything special because playing against the ai......well...it sucks Its only if you start playing it intensly against a friend that you discover its exelence and how deep the tactical aspect actualy is...making it by far the best game ever on the neo geo   (imo).
