Playmore didn't merge with SNK, they bought all of SNK's licences and the rights to their name when SNK went bankrupt a couple of years ago... although as far as I know the owner of Playmore is the ex president of SNK anyway, and some staff from the old SNK still remain there.
The reason they changed their name so much is because they had problems getting the rights to use the SNK name, which is why they started out as simply "Playmore" and then changed to SNK Neo Geo and SNK Playmore etc etc.
