Has anybody here ever tried the "alternative" single play game mode in KoF which enables the classic 1-on-1 gameplay? The game mode toggle can be found at the MVS options menu (like most of you probably know already).
I've been using the single play mode a lot lately and I think that playing KoF with just one character can be very refreshing instead of the standard 3-on-3 team play mode. It's very useful if you want to learn how to play with a character that you don't normally use. The single play mode can also be used to practice super moves.

Yeah, I used to choose it from the main menu of the AES versions so I could experience the game faster. IE: I would only have to fight two matches to the same music. the only downside, is that you have to fight the boss 2 rounds with one character. Which means the boss gets all his health back the next round.

1 on 1 is fun although I prefer team play because I like long battles.

1-on-1 when playing against my friends. Team battle when playing by myself.

I almost always play 3 on 3, cos like most others this is one of the main things that sets KOF apart from other games. I do play 1 on 1 occasionally, but not very often.

Completing the game is even more difficult in the single play mode... The single play game mode is still a nice extra feature and I think that all KoF players should at least give it a try. It also varies between different KoFs : - '98 : Classic 1-on-1 gameplay, 1-5 round win(s) required to advance - '99 : 1-on-1 gameplay + striker (player chooses 2 characters), 1-3 round win(s) required to advance - 2k : Same as in '99, "Battle won / lost"- screen has slightly different music than in team play mode (?). - 2k1 : 1-on-1 gameplay + 3 strikers (player chooses 4 characters, power bar is really short ;D), 1-3 round win(s) required to advance

3 on 3 is damn overwhelming when you're first getting into the game and haven't become natural with the characters you're using. I think it was a good few days before I moved on from 1 on 1s when I first bought the game.

1on1- gud for mastering a single character survival- lets u practice ur defence(even in other fighting games like Tekken 4) time attack- lets u practice ur offence 3on3-application of all skills that ive mention which makes kof one of the challenging fighting game.

I'm not against the striker system in '99, 2k & 2k1, but it would have been nice if the single play mode had given the players an option to play those KoFs without the strikers...

Well in 2k1; if u dont want to use striker, turn off the power gauge option. the prob is u cant use supers thats one of the reason y i dont like kof2k1 since it requires u to use 1 power stock to call ur striker.

I think what they were trying to do there was make strikers less abusable by taking away striker bombs but players worked around that by taking advantage of now having multiple strikers.
