It took a bit of getting used to, but nowadays I definitely prefer subs over dubs. Not that dubs are all that bad (unless you'd have yourself a hentai title and they hired a couple of porn actresses to do the voices, something which totally ruins the show). In fact, since most dvd's contain as well the original language as one or more dub tracks, it can be interesting to watch it in the original language first time around, and then go for the dub on second viewing. It teaches you something about the differences between the two versions, and can sometimes be very funny.

flan: yeah I agree with that... if nothing else watching the dub after the original language versions tends to help you appreciate how bad a lot of dubs really are. suko: I must admit, one of the highlights of each FOTNS episode was waiting for the narrator to scream something along the lines of "HUNDRED FINGER FLYING FIST DEATH SACRED MOUNTAIN WATERFALL HEAD EXPLODING PUNCH!!!!" in a super excited voice, while simultaneously flashing the same words up as a big subtitle on the screen. I do love Fist of the North Star (both the movie and series), but that stuff was just hilarious to see and used to have me and my friends dying with laughter at each death scene (when we were probably supposed to be taking it seriously). ;D Kaz

i feel strongly about this topic. . .
i choose subtitles over dubbs 1) By retaining the original japanese voices, you get to feel the character more. through the voice you get to understand his emotions, his/her character 2) Dubs are usually sucky.. . . becuz it souds over-acted, corny and cheap. . . plus, some stupid dubbers choose wrong voice types for some chars (kenshin for example, in the org. jpn, voice, he was played by a woman, it sounds like has a certain softness to him, but in the english dub, they used a regualr man voice which totally changed his "personality")
the only "excellent" dub work ive seen is P. Mononoke by Disney. . .

For me its mainly waht I watched first, just like Kaz I watched GITS in english, which I prefered more than the jap cast casue that whatsI saw first. The series I had no choice but to watch it in jap (untill September when its dubbed ;D) however I liked the jap cast even thougth they were the same as the movies becasue the personalities of the characters in the series differs a little, in the movie they sound like robots with no personality. I first saw Evangelion in jap .I first heard the dub when I watched End Of Evangelion DVD I thought the dubbed cast sucked bad! Later on though I liked it after watching it so many times becasue there was no way I could understand the what was happening in the movie subbed, that I was forced to listen to it dubbed. ;D (I understood most of the movie after that) Dragonball Z.......mixed bag, I enjoyed the english dub of the saiyan saga a lot, even after watching dub and finding out that 5+ hours were butched in the dub. I thought the english voice cast was pretty great untill they changed after about 53+ episodes, but the new cast did improve a little later on. I wasnt too upset about the butchered parts and the changed dialog (okay I was annoyed) the only thing I was gutted about after watching the dubbed was that they could have kept some of the music from the jap in the english version. Im worried about Naruto being dubbed, after I heard how the official translated manga were changing some of the name of the techniques, I was gutted as to what they would do dubbed. In the VIZ's official translation of the Naruto techniques, Bunshin no Jutsu was re-named to "Technique of the Doppelganger" Sexy no Jutsu that was cleverly called the "Ninja Centerfold Technique", The Byakugan which means "white eyes" was renamed to "evil eyes" and........Ino's Shintenshin no Jutsu (Mind body Switch Skill) was ridiculously renamed to "Valentine Technique"! narutofan.com/index.php/content-main,how%20to%20contact%20viz
