While extremely popular back in teh day, it seems that most 2D fighting game fans now dispise the original few mortal kombats.
Sure they've been the butt of jokes on many a fighting game forum, and still are - but which of the mortal kombats shares a special place in your gaming history?
For me, it was mortal kombat 2. It was just so much better than 1, but still maintaned the classic flavor that was absent from MK3. Sure theyre was way too much blood, the fatalities were laughably stupid, and almost all the male characters had the same voice samples - but I thought the character designs and the moves were completely awesome at the time. I mean ninjas are cool and all, but to have a move where you shoot a spear on a coil, and then yank the person over to you -thats just classic to me.
(Just played MK2 for the first time in years today)

MK2>the rest of MKs
brings back fond memories of the time explicit violence and gore isn't saturated yet, where fatalities were still cool...

MK trilogies isn't bad imo. It has the stupid fatalities in it but it has the most characters and thus more people for me to mimic with Shang Tsung ;D Killing my friends with their own fatalities was always fun.

Even when they came out ten years ago?
I used to think the graphics couldn't be rivaled since they used sprites of real people.

I've always been quite the mk fan, i don't understand peoples beef with mk3-mkt though. I really liked 1+2 but i thought the series has done nothing but progress positively with every new release, untill mk deadly alliance that is.
Anyways, id can't really choose an mk that holds a special place in my heart cause all the pre-deadly alliance games do. Mk 4/gold has my fav. gameplay though.

First time I saw Scorpion use his spear and shout "get over here", I was amazed. And then there were the fatalities of course. The severing of spines caused such a shock. Conservatism was like "oh man, this is bad" but meanwhile the uncensored Mega Drive version outsold the censored Snes version by far. It even made Nintendo change its policy with the release of MK2.
MK2 was my preferred one out of the series. The whole package looked solid and worked out. Afterwards there were just too many things added that made the series go down.

People bitch about it, but I've always loved the series as it is so much fun to play, but mainly against human opponents. MK2 is also my favourite, I remember owning and playing the SNES carts to death, a that was the best port of the game released for any system imho.
TOASTY!

I love the mortal kombt series. I couldnt wait till hit the genisis back in the day. I use to get schooled in the arcade. There were guys who could do amazing combos. somebody like xbox should rerelease old game like this to play online since online gaming killed the arcade scene. It would be a gold mine. And like you and other neogeo fans 3d doesnt make the game better I like old school mortal 123 and ultimate much better than deadly alliance. 2d is rapidly dying except games like guilty xx2 and rumble fish. the whole mk franchise is good even the first movie rocked.

I'd have to agree about the first movie. I usually don't like movies based off of video games but I really enjoyed that one. The 2nd one might not have been bad either if they had just kept the same actors.

GET OVER HERE! ;D

Hmm...I think I've heard something about those games... I can't remember exactly was it the 3rd or the 4th mk that was on Super Nintendo. Anyway, my cousin had bought it, and I was amazed how "real" ( lol ) it looked back then. At that time, it was badass to teh max.

the snes had MK1, MK2, and MK3 Genesis had those as well as "Ultimate MK3" which brought back scorpion and got rid of Shiva ;D
SNES versions are far superior to the genesis ones IMHO

The first movie was great fun I thought... it wasn't the greatest movie ever, but at least they kept it reasonably close to the original, and of course you had Christopher "there can be only one" Lambert hamming it up as Raiden ("I don't think so!"), which was cool. Second movie flat out sucked though... I mean shit, that whole underground travel section near the start sends shivers down my spine There's a third movie on the way and it sounds like it could be half decent this time... they are bringing back the original actors and apparently ditching everything that happened in MK2 as if it was some sort of dream, so it might be ok. edit: there now seems to be no mention of a third MK movie on IMDB.com... it's like it's been canned or something. Oh well... Kaz
