Hey all, People have suggested doing Metal Slug as the next game discussion, so here it is. I'm actually gonna do one Metal Slug every couple of days until we have covered all of them. Please forgive if I am rambling more than usual or just plain incoherent right now, I'm a little ill at the moment and have been in bed most of the day... still waking up . Here goes: homepage.ntlworld.com/darren_reynolds/gamediscussion4 - metal slug 1/mslugtitle.jpeg[/img] homepage.ntlworld.com/darren_reynolds/gamediscussion4 - metal slug 1/mslugintro.jpeg[/img] homepage.ntlworld.com/darren_reynolds/gamediscussion4 - metal slug 1/mslug1.jpeg[/img] homepage.ntlworld.com/darren_reynolds/gamediscussion4 - metal slug 1/mslug6.jpg[/img] Well, where can I start? The grandaddy of all the MS games, and probably still one of the best! Some people actually claim this to be the best one, as the enemies are all human, whereas they added crazy things like aliens and stuff later on. I don't think this is *the* best in the series, but it's still great. After all these years I still haven't tired of my MVS cart of this game, and I still go back to it to try and get through it on as few credits as possible (I've one credited it a couple of times now). Although good graphics don't necessarily make a great game, boy do they add a lot to this one. The animation in the Metal Slug games is sitll some of the best you will find anywhere and also some of the funniest. There's a certain sadistic satisfaction that you feel after killing your enemies in many of the ridiculously over the top ways that this game offers... set them on fire with a flame thrower, run them over in a tank, get in close and use your knife, disintegrate them with a shotgun, or one of many others. The Slug tank looks especially great, and really reminds me of Bonaparte from Dominion Tank Police, which is definitely a good thing. Speaking of the shotgun, is this not the best weapon ever or what? I still remember the first time I ever picked up one of these babies on the 2nd stage... the way enemies just explode when you hit them with it and the way it takes apart tanks with such ease gives you a great sense of power. Gotta love it The only bad aspect of this particular Slug game is that it is quite short, and that most of the bosses are very unbalanced... by that, I mean that you can defeat almost any of them by using the tank/grenade trick, where you hold down while in the tank and keep throwing grenades. You can throw them really fast like this and this allows you to destroy bosses like the tank on stage 3 in a matter of seconds. This could be a good or a bad thing depending on your outlook... Discuss! ;D Kaz ps I will start adding some of the comments in these threads to the actual reviews on the site soon! I keep forgetting to do this...

YAY!
where do i start?! i played the PS port when it came out ,this is one of the games that made SNK.
Cool style, music, gfx (for its time)
Pros: Gameplay is so smooth and enjoyable, Nice wepons, cool effects, fun for multiplayer sessions, and the cool looking Nazi-wannabee enemy army. Especially that guy who is a cross between Saddam and Hitler (LOL!)
Cons: er.. loading times (ons teh PS)
my rating 8/10 (bcuz 3 was teh best)

I'd agree that I don't find this to be the best of the metal slugs but it's definitly a classic. Blowing stuff up with the rocket launcher and shredding people with a laser gun always gives me a sadistic grin. The part where you man the gun turret on the submarine is really cool and I can't remember if you ever do that in any other slug game. The only real faults that I found with are that it only has one playable character and some of the weapons are actually toned down compared to their newer versions in the later slug games.

First off, i can say that i have played this game so many times i can go thru the entire game and all its enemy's mentaly. This is my fav. metal slug that i have completely played out on the MVS, on psx, and kaillera net play I do agree that the bosses are a little unbalanced and too easy but i can forgive that, i know its a bit short but i think its perfect length for one sitting. (i can't force myself to go all the way thru 3 in one sitting) The greatness of the animations like in all the metal slugs and the beauty of the shotgun has already been mentioned by kaz, mslug1 is definately my fav. shooter on the neo and sidescrolling action game/series of all time

That Game is cool. It would be the best of the Series.......if there wasn´t a certain "MSlug3"! ;D So, that Game is really hot, the Enemys are good looking and funny at the same Time. It definetly has the old and beloved SNK Atmosphere and Charme and that makes me loving that Game 4ever! :)Yeah of course it´s too short, but it´s cool for the 5 Minutes you want to spend on it!! The best is the 2Player Mode, just to add...

I think out of the whole series Im a bigger fan of the origional than any of the others ,just because it was the first in a long line of great fun games. I really like the somewhat darker look of 1 a bit more than the others I should also add that I like the origionals length, its perfect for a quick destructive gaming romp when you dont want or have the time to spend playing for a bit. As for 3 ,there is no denying that is a great game due to its length alone though, X is another fave of the series for me as well ,gotta love the Aliens All in all other than 2 and its slowdown and 4 for its somewhat dull feeling gameplay {not sure why ..but it seems to feel that way to me} there isnt really a bad game in the entire run.

Yup...The original MS has got a totall different feel to it then the later follow ups. It has that WorldWar 2 feel to is,cos of the all human cast. And the great level design really fit the retro aspect of old Europe style landscape.. The soundtrack is totall badass,it really has that war-like heroic heavy rock tune to it,as goes for all the MS games. The machinegun is still my fav weapon in MS1.I love the way you can unload it on a tank and hear the cool impact soundeffect till the tank blows up. Another thing that is funny as hell is the way you just dive into a crowd of enemies and automaticly hack and slash them to death when pressing the shotbutton. It´s difficult to choose between all the MS games (except 4),they all have their own feel to the gameplay and atmosphere.

Hello, hello A Neo newbie has just arrived.
Ahhh yes Metal Slug, a true SNK classic. Let me start off by saying MS1 is IMHO truely the best metal slug. Everything is just seemless and just about perfect in this game. The WWII ambience that is created in this game is great and so is the gameplay. MS1 is the big daddy that started it all in a long run of MS games. This game gets all my five stars.

Some of this must stem from the fact that Nazca*COUGH*IREM*COUGH* made this one and the sequels were all made by SNK/whoever made 4 I dont really care that much because I didnt like that one.
It has alot of Simularities to some of IREMs older games like In the Hunt.
I still play my MVS cart pretty regularly.

to me, the game as a whole feels very... humble. it's a simple game, very novice friendly, non-over-the-top, and still provides a good clean challenge- i don't know, it's the complete package for a crazy 2D diehard like myself. it's got the formula for great gameplay down pat, something you rarely see in these unintuitive-controls, steep-learning-curve, sloppy-programming times.
plus the longer range of the flamethrower doesn't hurt, hehe. man i am ever preachy...

So just a while ago I decided to sit down and play some Neo ;D I havent touched mine in probablya month or so ,been really busy with work and have wanted to play games but it just felt too much like work. You know when you get that itch to play but just cant seem to bring youreself to do it. Anyway I poped Slug 1 in and started kicking some ass and then decided that I havent used my headphones in a while and got them out These are what I use for my Neo www.epinions.com/elec_Audio-Headphones_Sony_MDR_C-Sony_MDR-CD60Definitly the best mini jack headphones I have ever heard hands down ! Im no big Sony fan but they got these right from the get go If you run a headphone board with youre MVS get these headphones ,trust me it will be money well spent ! Ive had mine for about 3 years now and they work flawlesly to this day ,and yes I use mine at high volume levels ;D They even reproduce bass very well when the lows hit ,I was pretty suprised when I first used them. I used them quite a bit for listening to games and music on my 3DO while playing other consoles or my PC ,I still use them for those late night rockout sessions at 3AM when my neighbors wouldnt be to happy Anyway if you need mini jack headphones these are worth the $30.00 price. Ok so back to the real post here ;D the sound output of Slug 1 through headphones is absolutly amazing for a Neo Geo game ! In reality most Neo games are very scratchy sounding and its instantly noticable when using headphones. Slug ! however isnt suprisingly enough. If you guys have the means to run this game through headphones bye all means do it ! you can almost get a surround sound effect if you run the cabinets speakers just a bit louder than the headphones ;D which sounds pretty damn cool ! For you guys who dont know about the MVS Headphone boards here is a few shots of mine ;D groups.msn.com/myneogeoandohtergames/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=100groups.msn.com/myneogeoandohtergames/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=103And here is a shot of the final cabinet instilation ,http://groups.msn.com/myneogeoandohtergames/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=54 this cab wasnt designed for headphones or a memory card reader, I plan on adding a memory card reader as well as a 4 slot at some point. The card reader will go where you see the 4 little felt pen marks below the headphone jacks , I was origionally going to mount the headphone board down there but then decided to squeeze them up top , which was quite a challenge in this cabinet and almost didnt work.

headset on your cab, that´s awesome,Candycab. Man,that would rock to listen thru a headset while playing all the cool arcade games. Thankgod i also can do that with my homesystem and you´re right about the sound. It´s amazing on MS.All MS for that matter. We´re amazed by the quality of the new soundtracks like ROTD and matrimelee but MS was already like that back in the days it was released........ amazing guitar licks and awesome heavy rock tracks, way ahead of it´s time compared to the other games.
