.... and can you tell me why you think it's the best one? It's just that I'm really tempted to pick one of them up and noticed thatyou can get copies of each for as little as 59p on Amazon!
Cheers!

Ridge Racer back catalogue for 59p wow! I don't mean to sound like a marketing guy for Amazon but get them all! Personally, as far as ps1/2 Ridge Racer goes, I'd have to say that Ridge Racer Type 4 is the best. It may be easy but it has some excellent courses, a great soundtrack and graphics that were very impressive in its day...let alone the drift happy gameplay I can't get enough of (it's when namco really perfected this). As a fan of the Japanese D1 series (drifting championships) anything involving cars going sideways gets a thumbs up from me! However, in terms of the best ridge racer game overall, I'd have to say that's the PSP incarnation. It features the best tracks from the series and an excellent compilation soundtrack of new and old tunes. If you got a PSP, I'd recommend this as well. It rocks!!!! ;D

I would agree with what phry said pretty much, especially with the PSP version being by far the best all round, although I know that doesn't answer your question. In my opinion though, all the PS1 RR games are top, but I must admit I am not a big fan of RR5 on the PS2 for some reason, and I never could get into it at all.
I still have a soft spot for Rage Racer (PS1) though - just loved some of the courses in it, and the whole upgrade system. RR4 is very good though, and Ridge Racer/Ridge Racer Revolution are great fun as far as old-school arcade games go. If you don't want them all though, I'd probably recommend skipping RR1 and just getting Revolution instead.

I think I'll get RR4 then! RR5 always seemed brilliant on paper, but everyone I know seems cold on it for some reason!
Thanks for you help.

Ridge Racer Revolution (the sequal to the orginal Ridge Racer) was always my perosnal fave' thanks to it's mix of crazy music and great track and car design although saying that it's pretty basic by todays standard but hey this was an early PSX title so i forgive it.

I didn't realise Type 4 came along with a version of the first Ridge Racer, and I got to say that seems deadly basic by todays standards! Sigh, the memories of being wowed by that game when my mate first got his PSX ...
Anyway, I got the game (£2.58 inc. postage. i'm impressed!), and it's great fun. Just trying to work my way through the Grand Prix to unlock as many cars as possible!

This thread's got me to dig out my own copy of R4 and play it again. Dammit...Too many games to play, not enough hours in the day! Must...unlock...pac-man... car...again.
Gotta love R4's intro though. It's sooo cheesy but definately my fave pre-rendered cut scene ever. The look of embarrassment on Reiko Nagase's face after she gets picked up is pure class.
