Not really that I know of... unless of course you manage to find a Japanese 1.5, then you can run homebrew etc.
Other than that, perhaps UK UMD films won't run on the Japanese one and vice versa. I have a feeling that they WILL work just fine, if they have regioned them like DVD's then we'll be ok because Japan is also region 2. I need to find someone with a UK UMD disc so I can verify this on my PSP.
Then again, who needs UMD movies when you can just upload your own stuff to the memory card?

I have heard many rumors about the Japanese psp's having a better screen. The Japanese psp's come with a screen manufactured by Sharp, whereas the US and UK ones seem to be produced by Samsung. Overall Sharp appears to give better quality (Sony taking the step to Samsung to cut production costs?), but whether this is visible to the naked eye is something else of course. And nobody seems to be able to confirm whether Sony sticked with Sharp screens for Japanese psp's that were produced later on. Apart from that, I remember that Sony fixed a weak spot at the backside of the psp for its US and European release. If you apply a bit of pressure to the backside of a Japanese psp, then you are likely to hear cracking sounds. I think Sony added another layer at the back in order to sort that out. Not that I would ever try to apply pressure to the backside of my psp.

Yeah it's like the people twisting the PSP to make the disc shoot out... it's never happened to me personally, and when I get really involved in a game I do manhandle the console a little bit... but I'd never be THAT rough with something that cost me so much money... I was never even that rough with my GBA SP, and those are close to indestructable, unless you throw it out of a window or something I also heard the rumours about the screens - no idea on what the truth is, and I've not been able to compare the two. Klark: cool, at least I know about the UMD's now, evem though I'll most likely never buy one... unless I can pick some up real cheap on Ebay or something. Kaz

I have just registered my Japanese psp on www.yourpsp.com. My psp's model number is psp-1000, but picking psp-1003 worked fine too. My psp pack with the free Spiderman umd is on its way. Did you try this one out too, Kaz? Somehow it sounds too good to be true.
