i remember a certain mod where you need the pro action replay to boot the import/bootlegged games, but the thing is, there were better alternatives than that, in my case, a full mod. but now i'm suffering the consequences of, i think, bad servicing or maybe just the fact that the mod wasn't that reliable in the 1st place at the time. why can't Sony revert back to the classic PS1 style lid thingy and give us back the opportunity to do the "swap" trick all over again ;D I remember when the MGS2 demo came out and was up for download, I was so desperate to try it (and there were no real mods back then) that I actually took my PS2 apart so I could do the swap trick using the Action replay . Man those were crazy times! There are swap lids you can buy for the PS2, but if you want to play imports/backups etc then a real mod is the best choice and you will save yourself LOTS of hassle in the future imho. Kaz

This time last week I bought Vice City, VF4:E, 2 memory cards, a scart lead and DVD regionX, but guess what? No PSTwo cos they've all sold out nationwide in response to the release of GTA:SA. BAH! I'm told there won't be any in stock til December, and it's all a lottery anyway. Ho hum. I'm tempted to get a 2nd hand PS2, but I think I will hold out.
I'll keep an eye out for modding at computer fairs though, as I might yet change my mind about playing SF3 on PS2. Chances are though I'll wait for emu so I can play against people online.

I did hear a couple of reports of certain mods causing damage to PSTwo's, but so long as you get the right chip it should be ok... also the one guy that I know of at the PC fairs (based in Coventry I believe) does give a gaurantee, so if anything was to go wrong with the mod then you'd be ok. How come you didn't want to play SF3 on the PS2? Cos of the lack of online play? Personally I wouldn't play it anyway cos it suxors imho... but yeah I know I'm one of the few Kaz

Yeah, I want it for online play, as none of my mates like SF3, but on the other hand, I love to play the game anyway, and it really needles me that the DC version wasn't arcade perfect. . Also I can't decide whether or not to fork out to mod the PStwo. Can you PM me contact details for that chap in Coventry? I'm from the West Midlands anyway! Dunno if I will still go thru with it now, seeing as I've now gotten the DVD Region X boot disc, but if they offers a guarentee for his work and is reliable then I will still consider it! Cheers.

And no, you're not in the minority who hate SF3, you're in the MAJORITY! Some people are sick of SF, others think anything 2D is dated and won't play anything that isn't 3D (cretins) or they like previous SF games but just don't like the feel of SF3. Shame really, as I love the game. I'd love more competition. It also narks me that the game that most seems to be played on Kaillera is SFA3, which I detest.

The name of the place is gamefx I believe, I'll try and look up the contact info as I did have it a while back and will fire over a pm if I find it. You'll have to check to see if they give a guarantee as I'm not 100% sure. I like Street Fighter, but I'm more a fan of old-school SF (but I still love Alpha/Zero as well). I just never did enjoy the character lineup in SF3 as some of the new characters are just plain lame imho (but a few like Remy/Alex are good). I also really detest most of the music in it and just don't care for the feel of it much, despite trying numerous times to get into it. I do really respect the work that went into the animation side and I can more or less understand why the fans like it so much, but it just isn't for me. If you are from the Midlands you probably aren't a million miles away from me as I am in Leicestershire. Kaz

Yeah, that was the 4th reason. I remember looking at New Generation's screenshots in CVG and my mate pointed at it and just went "ewwww". By the time 3rd Strike arrived things had gotten a bit out of hand with Q and Twelve. They really do look stupid and out of place. They look like they should be in Choaniki instead! Well, no, I correct myself ... Urien and Gill should be in Choaniki.

lol yeah, Urien and Gill are two of the worst characters ever I think... and Urien made it into Capcom Fighters Evolution over some other much more deserving characters . YGPM btw Kaz

Tho Urien has a bad design (oiled up geezer in a thong who rips his clothes off before a fight ... he's the last guy you wanna meet down a dark alley!) I reckon he's one of the most excellent characters to play as in any 2D fighter. His Aegis Reflector is just sooo much fun to use! I've reserved a PSTwo now. I'm told early December, and I'm looking at picking up Silent Hill 4 with it. I'm a bit narked that my mate was gonna sell me his ancient copy of SIlent Hill 1 a few months back, but when we went to look for it, he'd lost it! We never did find out where it went ... And thanks for the PM. I'll look into it.

linker4u.com has a nifty fliptop lid for the pstwo here www.linker4u.com/pp/linker4u.aspI just ordered one and should get it in a few days along with swap magic 3.3. Other then the interesting mess I'll go through to replace the lid this should prove very useful. Other then some modchips frying the pstwo I wouldn't leave it on standby mode either(some of my friends do this for their convenence) but it's not safe for the new models because there's no internal fan and the laser is likely to burn out overnight.

I wouldnt worry too much about heat issues since these things are designed to be on for very long periods of time and if it truely needed a fan it would have one. Dont worry about the laser either ...on is on ..meaning there is no difference between the machine idling or reading ,the only thing that changes is when its reading the armature on the laser moves it over the disc. The properties of the laser never really changes . I learned quite a bit about this stuff since Ive been a LaserDisc nut for about 15 years, all the players eat lasers about every 2 to 3 years and have three lasers inside to read the disc. Needless to say I got tired of paying for repairs and now I know how to do my own

I was totally wrong about the fan. After opening up my pstwo to change the lid I saw small fan above the motherboard. The lid wasn't very hard to install, I just had to remove the warranty sticker which is easy, and certainly replaceable, then pull out the old lid from the top half and swap it for the fliptop. The only problem is the lid is a little warped and it's not quite bent down enough to hit the back sensor to dectect it as closed. I'm gonna weigh it down overnight to see if I can shape it to touch the sensor permanently.
Edit: Ok even after leaving it weighted down all night it still didn't bend so I'm gonna have to come up with something else. I tested swap magic 3.3 and it worked flawlessly with guilty gear xx #r korean though. It even saved on my memory card with american saves without any trouble.
