So does PS2 Kaz (right in the start up of the console) ... it also has another option which u can change the speed of the dvd drive to read the games/discs faster This to is in the start-up configuration of the system When u unable the fast read option ... it plays all games faster by at least 45% ... a good use for this would be in games that take long to load up ... Eg. Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2 This is the only console which actually has this option how cool is that ... I bet u guys never knew that about the PlayStation 2 ayy ;D btw Kaz ... wat's so good about Pal 60 any way ... and also I heard of something called progressive scanning wats that supposed to do? And outa the normal Pal, Pal 60 and Progressive Scanning which is better Thanks Kaz

Ummm no... Those options for faster disc read and texture smoothing are for PS1 games only, not for PS2 stuff at all. If it can load the PS2 games faster anyway, why would they make you enable it in a menu? The only reason they let you enable/disable it for PS1 stuff is because some PS1 games don't work well with it turned on. There isn't a 60hz option in the PS2 menu, it's reliant on the games having this option built in (you've probably seen games where they ask you if you want to run in 50 or 60hz when you boot up... eg Tekken 4. 60hz is better for the reasons I said above... ie 50hz PAL struff mostly runs like total shit and is 17% slower then the game should actually run. It was mostly earlier PS2 games that suffered from this, these days a lot of developers either optimize their stuff or put in 60hz options to get around it. Seriously... go grab Tekken Tag PAL and play it for a bit, and then play the NTSC version. PAL one has big black borders at the top and bottom fo the screen, and runs far far slower so it's almost impossible to time your combos right if you are used to playing it at the proper speed. Kaz

Not wishing to annoy you but I don't think increasing the disc speed would make games load faster, it would be able to have more on screen with smoother decals and other various textures but that would only happen if the games were made to support cd overclocking. (just made that up ;D)
If what Kaz says is true then that explains it.

Basically it works cos the PS1 only had a double speed drive iirc correctly and the PS2 drive is obviously faster, so it can attempt to read the PS1 discs at a faster speed than the PS1 itself would have. Seems to work pretty well on a lot of games I tried it on, although on a few it made no discernable difference at all. Same with texture mapping... it looks nice(ish) on some games, whereas on other games it screws em up bad (try it on a 2d game ). Kaz

Man ... i'm pretty sure i read in this official site that it speeds up the ps2 games as well and other discs too Nah it's just for PS1 games, same as the texture smoothing. And yeah, Raiken, using texture smoothing on 2D games has some quite hilarious results at times Kaz
