Favourite Shoot Em Ups?

Just curious, as a little I was discussing Banshee and Uridium 2 with Kaz ...

By shooter, I'm talking about the flying spaceship variety, not the Metal Slug/Gunstar Heroes or Doom/Halflife varieties!

My favourites:

1) Ikaruga (DC, not played the GC version)
2) Thunder Force 3 & 4 (Megadrive)
3) Defender (Arcade/PD/loadsa good versions!)
4) Uridium 2 (Amiga)
5) Soldier Blade (PCE)
6) Gynoug (Megadrive)

Damn, I forgot Star Wars, the original Atari arcade! I'd rank that as on par with good old Defender!

Incidentally, what is Rez like? I always thought of it as some crazy souped up version of Star Wars ...! I keep meaning to check it.

It's kinda hard to describe
All the game is in wireframe, but the visuals are amazing
Then you shoot up objects and it makes sounds in the music, and more you advance in the level more the music advances
The music start off slowly with almost nothing and finishes with an awesome techno track
But you should try it, cause it really needs to be seen before judging it
The games isn't really hard or chanlenging, it's just something incredible to look at

Just a thought, but I prefer shoot em ups that don't make you go back to some restart point when you die. On the other hand, I do rather enjoy the R-Type series. It drives me up the wall in Parodius when I all powered up on the last few levels then get horribly killed and have to go through it again with half the firepower at best!

And has anyone played Thunderforce 3 and 4? What were your opinions between the two? I think 4 is better, but 3 will always have a special place in my heart as the first shoot em up I owned. One massive thing that 3 had over 4 was the balance of the weapons. Certain ones were way better to use in certain situations, but in 4, you could get by through most of the game with that all useful hunter! As much as I loved 4, that was a real disappointment to me.

Yes, but like Buddha says they rule. ;D

I prefer TF IV way over TF III, but that was because the fourth one was the first I got to grips with. After that, it's kind of awkward to go back to the third.

These games are quite cool espicially Time Crisis 3, i reckon thas the best so far
