RUMOR #1: At E3, Sega will announce it is getting back into the console business.

Source: An e-mail blast inviting press to Sega's "mystery event" at E3.

The official story: "Sega cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3. Sega remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be-announced titles."--Sega spokesperson.

What we heard: Ever since Dreamcast production ceased in 2001, the console's diehard fans have held out hope that it would rise from the ashes. This week, hope came in the form of a one-paragraph press invitation to Sega's E3 presentation. "Learn about SEGA's 2004 lineup and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess," read the invite, which promised "explosive news--something even YOU won't be able to guess!" (Emphasis in the original.) Within minutes, Sega loyalists were churning out messianic predictions of a new and improved Dreamcast. "Financially revitalized, finally debt-free, Sega now firmly believes it has what it takes to rule the roost," read one. But before you break out the straightjackets, consider this: Amusement-machine giant Sammy is Sega's majority stockholder, and its president, Hajime Satomi, is Sega's chairman. This year, Sammy's new Atomiswave arcade platform will replace the veteran NeoGeo format. The NeoGeo also came in a home console version, which had a customer base fanatical enough to shell out hundreds of dollars per game--in other words, a proven (if small) market. The Atomiswave's hardware is even more compact than the NeoGeo's. Sammy has announced that Sega will focus on developing games for the Atomiswave. Could Sega's big announcement be a new, Sega-branded home console based on the Atomiswave? It could be, but it would be sort of redundant, because the Atomiswave is already based on Dreamcast hardware.

Bogus or not bogus?: Although it's an intriguing theory, it's probably bogus. Note to Sega: Kudos for making one publicity e-mail go a long way.

well, it does seem kinda fake, but what if a DC revival is on the way?! prolly, some Sega handled Atomiswave ports... but on DC!!! Whoot!

but knowing Sega has quit the console biz, prolly not, but Sammy, i guess well just see...

i read a similar sort of thing on a sega site a few days ago....it wouldn't suprise me if they don't move back into the console business....but i thought they may start supporting the dreamcast again with the new atomiswave ports.

Having done some snooping and looked at the wild theories floating about, I'd say that the DC revival would be the most likely - seeing as the old NG console is no longer going to be supported after Samurai Shodown Z Special - it makes sense to have the DC as a platform for hoime conversions of Atomiswave games, especially as it is so similiar to a DC anyway.

Can't wait to find out ...!

Unless it's a new console (which it isn't) or Shenmue 3, it's just going to make me less impressed with Sega's overall performance this century.

...or a rerelease of Panzer Dragoon Saga of some sort, which it also definitely isn't. It wouldn't suprise me if sega does something really big and exciting, but I would be equally unsuprised if it turned out to just be fanfare for some lame PSO expansion pack that costs $45.00 an hour to play.

damn, why would sega's performance be unimpresive? just becuz they were outsold by Sony which is one of the reasons of the DC's demise... they made great games throughout the century! ever heard of Sonic 3? or maybe Virtual On? cmon, they had a fair share of greatness, so what if thier consoles always came to a crash, but within these consoles,are games gamers really loved, so what if they had a very large debt problem, their partnership with sammy helped in curing that, and within that time, they were still alive and kickn makin some decent games for ps2 or ngc... and no offense,(sorry SNK), SNK did worse (in the later years til SNKP) than Sega did , right?

and yeah, Shenmue 3 would rock, but it must be on DC, not xbox!!

If I had more interest in the neo during days of the saturn I probably would have liked it for all the ports but it didn't interest me much. Games for the genesis are classic though like Goldnen Axe, ESWAT, Gunstar Heros, Sonic, etc.

To be honest, although new Sega hardware would be cool it would be suicidal of them to release new hardware in todays climate... they'd end up pumping in way too much money which would be better spent financing new games. Sega had money problems not so long ago, so I'd hate to see them go back down that road again

But yeah... give us Shenmue 3 dammit!!! ;D

You're thinking of the wrong century, buddy! I love sega up until the demise of Dreamcast. Shenmue 2 has really been the only good thing they've done in the 21st century.

Sega game library = impressive, Sega marketing = totally unimpressive. Yes, as usual good old Sega was totally inept at marketing their great games outside of Japan.
