playstations (1 and 2) from experience are low-maintennanc consoles with cheap parts and is easy to repair. my old psone lasted 5 years since 1999 with a history of a few skipping or unreadable games (though i solved that by tilting the ps1 in different kinds of angles) and breaking once due to external idiocy (my lil bro plugged the 110v PS1 in a 220v socket), and at the last year it finally broke but still due to external idiocy (all thanks to my auntie)

my ps2 was bought in 2001 and, up to now (even with all them dust surrounding it due to laziness on cleaning the console) it's still functional. it became screwy though when i modded it to play imports but the mod is not fully compatible with all games and kinda messed the cd reading system, so currently i can only play my "The Sims" and watch DVDs (should've gone for the better, more expensive mod which makes it compatible w/ nearly everything! but that's besides the point). i may be repeating myself but even with all that my ps2 is still as good as ever.

so being a low maintennance system i kinda noticed that it doesn't get as overheated as compared to other electrical appliances, that's why i can squeeze in a lot of gaming all-niters before it slows the system for a few seconds (especially the ps1! man the system was used for like, 4-digit hours!)

that's why playstations became so popular...

kaz: i think one of the reasons playstations in your area break down easily is that sony doesn't seem to give the same quality control on PAL systems compared to that of ntsc and ntsj systems (or i may be mistaken since i'm not really up-to-date with the quality assurance of the newer systems... tch! whatever...)

I always hear all this stuff about how unreliable PS2s are in the UK, and it is offputting. Perhaps I will invest in a US one instead and just mod it. Or just get a GC...

if you're gonna get a PS2 then get it mod make sure you ask if the mod will make the PS2 be compatible with all games (PS2 discs, PS1 discs, DVD and their import versions) because if it's not gonna be fully modded you're gonna have problems playing some games in the long run (my PS2 used to play some PS2 games fine, but after less than a year of being modded it can only play my "The Sims" and some DVDs)

but i've been wondering about GC and X-Box's system. do they have to be modded to play imports too?

For the GameCube all you need is the Action Replay cd and memcard { which come as one set } it has what it calls "Freeloader" { which is a multiregion boot disc } on the cd as well as the usuall cheats { which are embeded into the memory card } so there is no need to open youre cube and wire a switch in it. The switch mod is actually very easy to install but if you can use a cd instead then why not. I have one and it works great.

The current best PS2 mod chip is the Magic 5 mod chip. It plays PS2, PS1, Imports, Ntsc,Pal,Secam and all backup's of games. Also all dvd's and so on so forth ;D

i would like to try the ps3 it sounds like it will be cool but what about the news version of xbox imo you have to play a system before buying it and about the break down of the ps2 mine and my bro's stop reading dvds and blue disc's all i did was cleaned the laser yes i did have to take the top off but it was very easy cause the laser is easy to get too

There's really nothing Sony can do to impress me. Every console they've released has been overshadowed technology-wise by the competition (even if they end up outselling their competitors).

Whatever PS3 has, Microsoft will have bigger and better, then again, I'm already not much of a fan of Xbox 2 as it is now, it's a mac with a giant digital camera card in it...

The golden age of console gaming is definitely over, as everyone is just trying to make their hardware as "online" as possible, as if this were 1998 all over again.

hmmm I really hopefully would love it if for once sony thinks bout it's hardware and makes it the best out of all of the others. Then it would definately dominate over all.

imo it does not matter what technology the system has in it its the games that come out for the system that make me what to buy the system and latly the only good games i have seen are for the ps2 and computer so if the ps3 has good games i will buy it. xbox comes out with 1 out 10 good games the ps2 has had about 7 out 10 imo that are good i do agree with the fact that it is now all about online games i dont thing the console's are going out for a long time

wat happened to all the PS3 anticipation talk I mean u all know that HOPEFULLY PS3 will have better specs than XBOX 2 and the NGC 2

Take this into consideration ... that the PS2 was 1st released then after a came the Gamecube then the Xbox.

So Sony had no info on the specs of any of the machines ... thas y the specs are like ... that but it's still great grahics n sound n all

But all this will change because now sony has COMPOTITION! so the PS3 beta b better than all the next age consoles ...

Sony has told media that tha PS3 will hopefully include tha CELL chip for those of u's living under a rock ... tha CELL chip is basically a super computer on a small chip ... and i literally mean super computer

PlayStation 3 chip nears completion


Cell, a radical new processor designed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba, could enter production in 2004.

Collaborating engineers from IBM, Sony, and Toshiba have wrapped up the design for the inner workings of a mysterious new chip called "Cell." The new multimedia processor, touted as a "supercomputer on a chip," is well on its way to completion, IBM says. The chip could end up inside the PlayStation 3, and elements of its design will be seen in future server chips from IBM.

Cell has nearly "taped out"--an industry term meaning that the chip's pen-and-paper design and layout have been completed. Soon the design will be handed over to engineers in manufacturing, who will craft samples. Meanwhile, engineers have been testing various subelements of the processor, both separately and together, before the manufacturing unit connects them inside actual Cell chips. At this rate, commercial production of Cell could begin as soon as the end of 2004.

While details remain vague, Cell will differ from existing microprocessors in that it will have multiple personalities. The chip will not only perform the heavy computational tasks required for graphics, but it also will contain circuitry to handle high-bandwidth communication and run multiple devices, sources say. This multifaceted approach is possible because a single chip will contain multiple processing cores (hence the name "Cell"). Communications features expected to be in the chips will also allow devices to form powerful, peer-to-peer-like networks, some analysts believe.

While the processor's design is still under wraps, the companies say Cell's capabilities will allow it to deliver 1 trillion calculations per second (teraflop) or more of floating-point calculations. It will have the ability to do north of 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.

Cell will likely use between four and 16 general-purpose processor cores per chip. A game console might use a chip with 16 cores, while a less complicated device like a set-top box would have a processor with fewer, said Peter Glaskowsky, editor in chief of influential industry newsletter Microprocessor Report. Some of these cores might perform computational functions, while others could control audio or graphics. But not everyone thinks this approach is groundbreaking, given that some processors already use inter-chip multiprocessing. "I just don't see that Cell is revolutionary, except in its marketing impact," Glaskowsky said.

While Cell's hardware design might be difficult, it's creating software for the chip that will be the trickiest part of establishing it in the market. "It's going to take an enormous amount of software development," said Richard Doherty, analyst with Envisioneering. "We believe the chip architecture is going to be on time and ahead of the software wizardry that is going to really make it get up and dance."

Furthermore, creating an operating system and set of applications that can take advantage of the Cell's multiprocessing and peer-to-peer computing capabilities will be the key to determining if Cell will be successful, he said.

Knowing this, the three chip partners have so far set a goal of crafting Cell as a system, creating an operating system and application software alongside the Cell hardware. Cell's designers are engineering the chip to work with a wide range of operating systems, including Linux.

But the chip triumvirate is also developing a purpose-built Cell operating system and applications, which Cell's developers will use to test the chip's various features, such as its multimedia-processing capabilities. They are also likely to form the basis of a Cell software development kit and also the Cell OS and applications for end devices, such as game systems, sources said.

While much of the work on Cell is complete, there's still a lot left to do. Together, the hardware and software teams will continue testing the chip's inner workings. The last stage of development work, which still lies ahead, includes completing circuit layout and then eventually testing actual sample chips.

IBM is expected to begin manufacturing Cell as soon as 2004 or possibly early 2005. But Jim Kahle, director of broadband processor technology and a research Fellow at IBM, confirmed only that the Cell project is on track to meet its 2005 release schedule, which was set forth at its initial announcement. The rest of the chip's schedule is a secret, at least for now, he said.
