*sigh
My friends are obsessed with buying games for their new consoles just so they can brag about the polygons being pushed etc. Buying a 2D game, would have no point in their minds, as its not showing off what the Xbox/PS2 can do.
Who cares about gameplay anymore!

Friendly reminder Marko, ( ) i'm not trying to be a dick about it but i must ask you to post threads in their aptly named locations. Seeing as this isn't emulation related but pertains to games it belongs in this section. About 2d games, i also miss them in certian classes of games but for the most part i'm happy with 3d if its done thoroughly. I certianly would not like playing a 2d half-life 2 or doom 3 no matter how well it was done. (I dispise cell shading... damn you windwaker!)

They're a dying breed. In an era with 128 bit consoles and rising the companies focus more on attracting the masses with fancy graphics then gameplay imo.

3d has its flair, but 2d has its own also! 2d has the feel that 3d cannot channel to us (and the same way vice-versa). from USA sony's standpoint they seem to be discarding what made ps1 so damn great: versatility of games. may it be action or adventure, platform or strategy, rpg or survival horror, 3d or 2D! with sony not allowing the realease of "cruddy" (for them i guess) 2D games like Metal Slug 3, it's a lot o' points of my coolness meter for them. long live 2D, for gaming didn't start 3D.

I'm not bothered by the absence of new 2D games since I never get bored playing games the like of Galaga, Ghost 'n Goblins, Kung Fu Master etc. Come on, there is so much awesome classic 2D stuff out there you'll still need a lifetime to get into all of it.

Double Dragon was one of my fav. games as a child but when i look back at it now it seems so boring & redundant. Streets of Rage is the best beat em' up series ever imo though it also seems pointless to me know the same as DD.
I never played this 'Kung Fu Master' game you mentioned flan_man. Whats that like?

Unlike most classics Double Dragon doesn't seem to have aged so well. About this Kung Fu Master: that one had Game of Death written all over it. Basically it's a sidescrolling fighter where you work your way through five floors, disposing of baddies that come towards you both from the right and the left. You only have one basic punch and kick at your disposal, but it does make a big difference if you're standing, crouching or jumping while performing them. I loved it. Every enemy requires another tactic to dispose of. It's not just mindless punching. For instance: by the time you reach the second floor, coloured vases start falling down, and you have to anticipate on the colour because it indicates a particular kind of threat. More details and pics here.
