Mine are in no perticular order: - Soldier blade, pc engine (best 8 bit soundtrack i've ever heard)
-Thunderforce 4(megadrive version)/5(saturn) (almost identical games except for the nice add on that the 3d grafics gave to thunderforce 5. part 4 plays a little harder, faster)
-ESP RA DE, ARCADE (dodging skills galore in this arcade shooter from Cave)
-the entire Dodonpachi series, ARCADE (damn combofreaky maniac shooter)
-Star fox, super nintendo (come on, it's a classic we all got hooked on, solid gameplay and solid soundtrack)
-Blazing star, neogeo (best straight forward shooter ever)
-Gradius Gaiden, ps1 (best gradius version to date...we'll see what gradius 5 brings us) Radiant silvergun, dreamcast (perfect, just perfect)
-Panzer Dragoon Orta, X box (Droolness galore, plus solid story and action)

I always thought it was strange, that the category shmups or shooters included such a different variety of games. IE: 3D doom/quake style games, Ikaruga/darius style games, Metalslug type games.
Anyways, I'll just mention my Ikaruga/darius style games.
1. Ikaruga 2. Gigawing2 (4 player mode is teh maxor) 3. Gigawing 4. Blazing Star 5. Pulstar 6. Border Down 7. Mars Matrix 8. Ghost Pilots
Oh yeah, and R-Type Leon is the best, you even get teh 2 player mode. (Though I've never played the PSX Rtypes.) ACtually, maybe the best R-type would be Blazing Star...

I really suck at Ikaruga actually. I need to play it more although I'm the master at star fox. Won every single medal on normal and pro.

there's a gamcube version (assuming you have), but they say bad thing about this ver (slowdowns, etc) Must be fanboy talk then because I sure didn't notice any slowdown in my copy, even when the screen is full with objects and projectiles (which is most of the time). Silky smooth, but I wasn't able to compare it with the Dreamcast version. And eh... I didn't reach the end yet... so far a lovely conversion though

I own the DC version, and my friend owns the GC version.
After playing them both several times, I can state with full confidence that they play exactly the same.

Yeesh, what a question, how can I DECIDE?!?
..okay, I think I'm ready. Here goes. No order, of course:
-Majestic Twelve (aka Super Space Invaders '91) -arcade- the one that got me started all over again. Basically a great take on classic style shooters. I was tempted to choose the original SI, but this one retains a lot of the style but has a lot more variety.
-Shikigami no Shiro (1 and 2) -GC/PS2/DC/Xbox- great character design, lots of options, really pretty.
-DonPachi series -arcade- seiryu, we're in agreement on this one. Been playing quite a lot of these lately.
-Gunbird 1+2 -arcade/PSX/DC- great, fun games, very distracting for a few minutes of play.
Ugh, I could just go on and on. Gradius, Parodius, Bangaioh, R-Type, ugh, I could go on and on.
Regards, --B. Kai
