No, the Phoenix I think he means is the one that: Stage 1,2 - attack birds in space Stage 3,4 - attack individual birds that break up and reform after you shoot them. Stage 5 - Attack mother ship That game rocked! Along with ones like: Pleades Vanguard Defender etc. Yep, you got it! Here's a pic (it's in MAME if anyones interested and likes really old school shooters):  I remember playing that in the arcades whenever I got the chance, back when I was about 5 or 6... wish I could find one of those arcade machines in mint condition (and have the money to buy it of course  ). Defender kicked serious ass back in the day too ;D Kaz

Galaga is a real classic, lol, i still have the NES cart to this day!

Phoenix was so incredibly hard from the very start, and a serious coin gobbler at that. I could get twice as much value out of money while playing Galaxians, and five times as much for Galaga.
Does Tempest qualify as a classic shooter too? Especially the revamped version on Jaguar with the flashy lightning effects. That was a sight to behold.
