How could I forget about the really old shmups! Three classics spring to mind: Galaga: highly addictive, I spent countless coins on this one Galaxians: same idea as Galaga, only much harder imo Gyruss: 360° shooting, and a great soundtrack to boot

Along the same lines as Galaga: Galaga '88. It takes everything great about the original and gives you more of it.
Another great classic is Phoenix. I'm not sure if it or Gorf was the first multi-stage shooter, but Phoenix stands up pretty well against its contemporaries.
Ugh, they just keep coming to mind-- Forgotten Worlds is still a favorite, if for nothing more than just aesthetics. The God of War still looks great!
You guys just had to get me started.
Regards, --B. Kai

I'm curious... what stage did he reach? not really sure since i was still a kid back then, but one thing for sure though, he can play a very long time w/o dying until he starts to get bored and intentionally kill himself. in earlier stages he always gets a perfect, so simply put i'm no match against him when it comes to totally old-school shumps.

lol I bet he's one of those pros who lets his fighter get captured so he can win it back and do the challenging stages with a double fighter. That'll rack up the scores.

Wow, soeone said Galaga and Galaxians... I'm impressed . Changing the subject slighty but does anyone else remember the arcade classic "Pheonix"? Another great old-school shooter! But anyway... I still have great memories of Radiant Silvergun, from the relatively short time that I owned a Saturn. Other than that I'm really into Pulstar and Blazing Star in the Neo. I also need to get R-Type Final, and find/dust of my old copy of Einhander for the PSX, that was also a good shooter with a great soundtrack! Kaz

The only phoenix I know of is where you keep rolling this ball down various platforms to avoid the ceiling. ;D

No, the Phoenix I think he means is the one that:
Stage 1,2 - attack birds in space Stage 3,4 - attack individual birds that break up and reform after you shoot them. Stage 5 - Attack mother ship
That game rocked! Along with ones like:
Pleades Vanguard Defender etc.
