I just managed to get hold of Sengoku Blade on import for my trusty old Saturn. It's one of those old school horizontally scrolling shoot 'm ups with pretty nifty background (feudal Japan style) and loads of decent bosses that come in different shapes (that is: blow off the outer shell to discover the even more gruesome opponent inside). Cover: In-game screen (that's right, the main characters hover around instead of spaceships): Okay, all of this probably won't interest you one bit, but before you ignore the rest: the game comes on two discs. One of them bears the actual shooter, and a second one comes with all kinds of extras (an image archive of about 1000 images being the most notable). A couple of these images are pretty... hot as they depict the main, busty heroine of the game ;D I took a couple of pics for your delight: To think this game dates from 1996 ;D How could I ever have missed something like this?

Sengoku Blade's (aka Tengai? Right?) a personal favorite. I also like Sengoku Ace, the prequel, for Mame. In the Saturn version is Ain selectable? I know that in the arcade version the code is: at the question mark, press up x3, down x3, up x7, but not sure about Saturn. Sheesh, that means I have yet another Saturn game to get hold of, along with Radiant Silvergun, Silhouette Mirage, and Groove On Fight (yup, I'm trying to chase down RS, finally).
Hey flan_man, did you come across this on eBay? If you don't mind me asking, what was the pricing like? I'm at work now, and my work proxy server doesn't like eBay too much.

I already tried the 3x up, 3x down, 7x up select cheat on the question mark and it works on Saturn.
I found it on eBay allright, and got it for $ 60. Surprisingly nobody else placed a bid, maybe because the seller was so honest to mention the jewel case had a scratch (everything else is mint though). I noticed a buy it now too, but that one was put at $ 80 and yes somebody did buy it. That was three weeks ago, and since then there has been no Sengoku Blade offer on eBay. I didn't know it was THAT rare.
I'm really getting into these classic shooters now, as the next one on the way is Soukyugurentai (many believe this one is as good as RS). And then Dodonpachi, Raystorm... argh... so many good shooters...

Wow, Dodonpachi (and Donpachi, for that matter) is excellent! I think there might also have been a Saturn release of Mahou Daisenraku, which is another worthy shooter with a weird racing/collection element (it's on MAME as well). How about Parodius? I scored a NEW, UNOPENED copy of Sexy Parodius for the Saturn for $25 about a year ago. I've been searching for Oshaberi Parodius to go with it.
Ugh, the Saturn was the absolute best for shooters. It's a real shame that so much for it now goes for such outrageous prices, but you can find the occasional gem.
On a related note, is anybody else excited about Gunbird 1+2 for the PS2? Allegedly it may get released in the US. I've heard that unlike the Dreamcast port of 2, there's no Morrigan, but I don't think it's much of a loss-- she was a clone of Alucard for the most part, as I recall.
Yet another great pair of Psikyo shooters! Ah nostalgia!

Tenkai, great shooter. And yeah, the characters are sweet as hell, made by Jun Tukasa. The man is a drawing genius. He´s makign a mahjong game fro the PS2 which is a must own for the Jun Tukasda fans. www.x-nauts.com/PS2/HG/

but r-type is the king of them all!! hullcityfcmad Play ESP RA DE, Guwange, Dodonpachi or Guyvern.(arcade games) Then say R-Type is still best shooter evaaar. There´s so many types of shooters. I prever the maniac shooters like ESP RA DE or Dodonpachi.

Me, I'm waiting anxiously for Shikigami no Shiro 2 on the Dreamcast, but until then, R-Type Final gives me nice warm feelings of nostalgia. I've also been playing (arcade) Dangun Feveron.
Seiryu, I _like_ ESP Ra. De., but I just can't get into it. Am I missing something?
Can you guys tell I've been experiencing a 'shooter renaissance' lately? I don't know, I'm getting kind of tired of fighters of late.

Games like ESP RA DE, Dodonpachi and Dangun feveron are all about dodging skils and getting those combo numbers high up there. Try to go tru ESP RA DE without using your force (AKA bombs). You´ll be flipping your mind out when you dodge everything a boss can shot out at you and you still dodge sideways and blow him away.
Shooters like that aren´t about power ups like R-type,etc...but about the dodging skills. Same goes for Dodonpachi, only there you can link up combo´s by shooting enemies after eachother to boost up your combo meter before your combo metergauge runs to zero and it starts counting the combo from 1 again.......can you say 400 hit combo?

I know what you mean! I appreciate dodging-intensive shooters very much, I was just saying that ESP Ra. De. seems a little bit... I dunno, bland as modern shooters go. It came highly recommended by a friend, but I by far prefer a Guwange or D. Feveron. I guess it's just a matter of taste. I hear that ESPgaluda is quite good too!
