Prior to using Mugen, I checked out another free fighting engine named "KOF91" (Dont know what that stands for) KOF91 was a nice try, but it was probably the worst fighting game engine I have ever played. -even worse than the game Brutal Battle if anyone has ever played that...
I had no standards at all for Mugen, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it. Mugen it seems, has been around for several years now, and over that time, the character creators have learned to use it well. A large percentage of the characters I have downloaded are very good. (Meaning identical to the game they are from)
To answer specifically, the hit protection and priority do not seem like a problem to me. Give it try, it even supports MP3s so you can play your Neo Geo characters to your SNK music collection.

LOL...yes,i have used it. I even made a characters for it.Galford. mugen.shijyou.com/The engine used for mugen is really great,it has lots of potential. You wouldn't believe the awesome characters some have made on the engine. A lot of really great creators even improved moves or tweaked them to make them look even cooler on a lot of the characters that have been ported to mugen. Basicly you rip the sprites from the game, using nebula or neorage. Then insert them into a file(grafic file) using a mugen program tool. Then you add collision detection boxes(the contact points for when you hit someone and for noticing when soemone hits you) to the sprites(as you can imagion it is a lot of work....every sprite needs collision detection naturaly...some characters have more then 1100 sprites) there's also a sound file...for putting all the sound effect into whe you do a move nad for the voice. The connection between what animation, keymove and what sound to go with it you use...is all placed in a simple text file like notepad or words....something like:dragon punch>>>use animation 235 and sound 35 when making motion F,D,DF, C(button) Then you also have a seperate text file in where you insert the way a move behaves...By this i mean what a move does to you and your opponent when hitting the move........how much damage it takes, how far up/down/away the move makes the opponend fly off when hitting.....and more of the stuff your move does. Well so this is a little on how it works.....but trust me...it's a lot of fun.... Not the cheap made characters but nowadays a lot of creators have made almost any character into mugen from any 2d fighting geame that you can play on a emulator. It's a lot of fun to see the action and some of the creations they made really make you go...ohw wow.that's a nice feature he gave Kyo,Iori or Ryu You can compare it a bit with CDHT but in a good way and very profesional looking if you really put together great characters and stuff. Yeah I've tried it once or twice, but I'll have to give it another go some time. I do remember KOF '91 though... man the engine for that sucked ass . How far did the guy actually get with it though? I was following the progress of it for a while, and then I totally forgot about it... I take it the guy doesn't work on it anymore? Kaz

Nope...MUGEN is made by elecbyte.com But it hasn't has a updte for over 2 years now. That really sucked cos it's fun to use but it's outdated for the newer computers... I can't make it work on my pc..... Too bad cos i would love to make another character for it.

I actually meant that KOF '91 thing... but if you never saw it is probably a good thing. It was a good try and better than anything I could do, but the engine was pretty bad when I tried it. Kaz
