What is mugen and how do play the games.

Im curious about the mugen community and what programs do you need to play the games. For example on this website www.neogamez.net/index.asp they show a neogeo game which I believe to be mugen. I would like to play this game but dont know how to go about doing it.

Basically Mugen is a fighting game engine, and you cna use it to make your own games... if you have the time and enthusiasm, you can rip the graphics for characters from games using an emulator (or even create your own) and make up your own game. The actual Mugen engine isn't the greatest though, but I've seen people do some pretty decent stuff with it.

I've never really messed with it so I'm not the best person to ask... seiryu or one of the others might know more. That KOF game that is shown on neogamez is basically a mugen version of KOF 2000 or something (not sure what the point of doing that is unless I am missing something).

They also seem to have a version of mugen on there that works with Windows XP. Interesting...

thanks kaz but I downloded the xp version and it keeps on crashing do I have to put game inside folder or something.

Ukyo, go to this website on how to start and add characters.
It's the best mugensite around and has all the best characters and a lot of info on the game.

Go to the MUGEN section on the left taskbar and you should see a menu that also has newby quick start on it.

Btw Ukyo, you dont need games to run mugen
The way it works:
1-You download some characters
2-You download some stages
3-You download a new Sreenpack (cause the default on doesn't have alot of space, so less characters)
You can get all those stuff here: mugenguild.cjb.net/

After that, you must open the `Select.def` (open with notepad) and then you must add some lines for you new characters and stages

Exemple: In mugen, there's a char folder, thats where you add characters
Unzip them there (they must be in a folder having the same name that the `******.def` you will extract)
After that, you open your `select.def``

If the character is named RyuEx, you will add (you add it in the character space, you should see `kfm` who is already there)

RyuEx, random
(random is for random stage)

For the stages, you only have to unzip the files in the stage folder

After that, if the stage is named: Dojo
you add

stages/dojo.def

I find mugen kinda trashy, the engine just makes it seem pointless when i tried it.

For example, you can turn the visuals to their max, dl a terry sprite rip, also any stage from any kof then play it thru mugen & compare with a neo emulator (i use nebula) It's like watching video tape vs. dvd, i personally want the best performance i can get when i play a 2D fighter on my pc, also mugen can't be played over the net
