I'm no expert so I can't help much, but do a search on google for tutorials on whatever gfx program you plan on using (eg, photoshop, paintshop or whatever). Another good place to looks is Solid Snake Designs (link at the bottom of every forum page), because they have a section on their forums for gfx tutorials, and there are some really good ones there.
