There was nothing really wrong with the AES design, aside from the fact that some versions have poor video output unless you get them modded. If you mean the price of the carts etc, it wasn't really a problem as they only ever intended it to be a rental system... it just became so popular in Japan that they decided to start selling it too. It was marketed badly in the USA though, very badly. Just go check out some of the adverts from back in the day 
The CD system does suck though... if it wasn't for the load times it'd be great
