Yeah I remember those times well 
You're right, I don't think it's too much of a problem now, but with the first batch of PS2 games it was... in fact it did carry on for quite a while until people actually complained. Onimusha looked like crap, Tekken Tag ran so slow it was like being in the Matrix, Devil may Cry had horrible borders etc etc.
