Sony want to appeal to the masses, and that means churning out pretty 3D games... I know they have a lot of dumbass rules (like in the past they actually STOPPED developers from putting 60hz options into their PAL games), and it is rumoured that they are trying to discourage developers from releasing 2D games, as mainstream gamers might see them and think they look crap... and I guess cos the Neo Geo ports are at a lower res they are even less keen on seeing them released.
Don't quote me on this as it might not be true, but it's been talked about before...
