"SNK Playmore today announced an early victory in its lawsuit against Aruze, the pachinko company from which it purchased the assets of the original SNK. A preliminary decision recently handed down by the Osaka District Court determined that Aruze unlawfully used SNK Playmore-owned trademarks subsequent to its sale of those trademarks, and will now move on to determining the damages it owes to SNK. SNK Playmore's case consists of a series of complaints lodged over the course of 2002, arguing that Aruze was continuing to use SNK trademarks -- characters from its popular fighting and action games, among others -- in its pachinko machines, slot machines, and PlayStation pachinko games. Together, SNK's five complaints seek more than 5.6 billion yen (about $52 million) in damages.
Whether it will receive that much depends on the court's decision, which will follow later this year. The court found in SNK's favor in all five complaints, however, which bodes well for its fortunes in the case's conclusion."
