I decided to buy a Neo Geo on my 25th birthday (september 15th) last week! I've been playing emulated arcade games for about four years now and I noticed recently that most of my favourite games were Neo Geo games. I thought about getting a Neo Geo for a long time (see the list at the end of this message for details), but I finally decided to buy it.
I thought about the MVS / AES question for quite a while as well, but then I got a pretty good offer on a Japanese AES machine from a local games store that specializes in second-hand games. Here's a list of what I ordered :
Please note : The whole package except for the converter will be imported from Japan to Finland (halfway across the world! ;D). The prices include the postage and taxes. I also sold my old PlayStation + 11 games for 140 € to save money. I still have to wait 1½ weeks before the package arrives...
Here's a list of things that I considered before I decided to buy a Neo Geo (+ = why I should buy a Neo Geo, - = why I shouldn't buy a Neo Geo) :
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ I'm fortunate to own a 41" Sony flatscreen projection television with my brother. (We're VERY lucky to still have it, because it broke down pretty badly and was repaired about 4 years ago, but I'll tell you that story some other time.
) It has normal 4:3 picture aspect ratio, which makes it perfect for Neo Geo!
+ SNK vs. Capcom Chaos, The King of Fighters 2003, Samurai Shodown Zero. I love Neo Geo's fighting games and it seems that they're becoming even better than before!
+ You can usually find older Neo Geo games at low prices (with some exceptions of course).
+ I haven't played many great Neo Geo games like Garou : MOTW yet. I have seen only about 25% of all Neo Geo games.
+ My local arcade died some time ago
, which means that I most likely won't be able to play new Neo Geo games in the arcades.
+ I want to support SNK Playmore so that there will be new Neo Geo games in the future.
- All Neo Geo games are emulated. Even new releases will be found fairly quickly on modified / hacked emulators.
- New Neo Geo games are very expensive.
