It's the first time in a Neo game afaik... but they did something similar during the supers in Gal Fighters on the NGPC if I remember correctly?
I like this effect, and I do enjoy the Vs games from Capcom... but just imagine for a second what the SS series would be like if they turned into a bit of a button mashing game like MVSC2 is... now *that* would be evil...
