If you feel brave you could try taking the cover off the PS2, removing the top part of the DVD drive and adjusting the white cog that determines the angle of the laser. I had to get my PS2 repaired some time ago as it was completely fubar, and it was ok for a long time but has been slightly flaky recently... adjusting the cog (VERY carefully) and cleaning the lens did the trick to a certain extent and I can now play almost all CD/DVD games, but in time it will definitely need to be fixed again properly. Failing that I may just buy one of the new slimline PS2's...
