PS2 can read DVDR no probs and burnt movies will work just fine... but only if they are the correct region for your ps2 or have been set to region 0 so they will play on anything. Games wont work though unless it is modded 
As for DVDRW... not all PS2's read those, although most of the newer ones do. Mine is an old one though unfortunately, so it doesn't
