Go gentle on the freeware next time, Buddha. You can always check if a program you want to install is on the list of notorious spyware:

An alternative for Ad-aware is Spybot: look for it here. It's not a bad idea to use both programs: sometimes one of them finds entries that the other one doesn't and vice versa. A bit like with virusscanners.
A good alternative for the spyware infested Kazaa is KCeasy. Searches through three networks: OpenFT, FastTrack (this is the one used by Kazaa) and Gnutella. Best bit: no spyware and ads.
