I didn't hear about him till I tagged along with some friends to go to the Rotterdam Film Festival (flashy name, just a cinema
) and they said "let's go to Zatoichi, awesome movie" and I was like "what's Zatoichi?"
Well Zatoichi is a legend in Japan, he's as famous just like Indiana Jones is in the States. He's a blind samurai that has superhuman hearing ability. He has a lot of experience in talking and fighting, and is a gambler too. Zatoichi even really roamed the streets in Japan, in the 1800s. He's a good talker, but when the innocent are in danger, he turns into an unstoppable violent samurai slashing his way through the bad guys.
There were alot of movies made of Zatoichi, 26 to be exact. Released/Made in 1930-1990. All of them were old-skool samurai movies. I never saw any of those old movies.
The movie I saw, was the remake of "some" movies of Zatoichi. For example, it had the famous "Zatoichi vs a gang of samurai's on the beach in the rain" scene. And it's totally renewed with computer effects. So you can see some flying hands/fingers. The scene is a total massacre and classic samurai fighting at it's best.
It really feels classic too. So it isn't your daily "Kill Bill" action movie with a little samurai fighting. It's just hacking and slashing with blood flying across the scene.
The actor who plays Zatoichi (2003) is "Beat" Takeshi Kitano. I don't really like Kitano, because of his TV shows. Battle Royale and Brother were great though. And after I saw Zatoichi. I really started liking the actor/director.
So if you haven't seen Zatoichi yet, see it now. It's a great movie.
