I forgot to mention this earlier even though I knew it but have you ever heard of an anime called yu yu hakusho seiryu? There's a part in the first season where the main characters have to fight the 4 gods from that legend you mentioned. Here's a pic of seiryu from that anime.
It's a pretty good anime overall IMHO. Also the the four kinds of clue books you pick up in Onimusha are named after the gods.
