I just ordered one and should get it in a few days along with swap magic 3.3. Other then the interesting mess I'll go through to replace the lid this should prove very useful. Other then some modchips frying the pstwo I wouldn't leave it on standby mode either(some of my friends do this for their convenence) but it's not safe for the new models because there's no internal fan and the laser is likely to burn out overnight.
I wouldnt worry too much about heat issues since these things are designed to be on for very long periods of time and if it truely needed a fan it would have one. Dont worry about the laser either ...on is on ..meaning there is no difference between the machine idling or reading ,the only thing that changes is when its reading the armature on the laser moves it over the disc. The properties of the laser never really changes .
I learned quite a bit about this stuff since Ive been a LaserDisc nut for about 15 years, all the players eat lasers about every 2 to 3 years and have three lasers inside to read the disc. Needless to say I got tired of paying for repairs and now I know how to do my own
