I agree that Streets of Rage is the best scrolling beat em up ever. Final Fight would perhaps be second, and SOR2 a close third in my book. I just preferred the style, music and variety of the levels of SOR1 over 2. SOR3 tried to combine what was missing from the 2nd, but I didn't like it much at all. It should have been great but just seemed like a dull rehash with overly elaborate special moves to me. I just love the music in SOR1 too! Awesome stuff.
Another game that was superior to its sequels was Sonic 1. Sonic 2 just seemed like an even easier rehash with less ideas and levels that didn't flow as well, and 3 was dull to me. Like SOR1, Sonic 1 had a feel to it (gameplaywise, graphically and sonically [no pun intended]) that the sequels couldn't better. Hearing Green Hill Zone's theme-tune always brings a nostalgic tear to my eyes.
And may I just say, I too bought the Altered Beast Megadrive pack. Ah, those garish colours and poorly sampled speech. "WIIIIISE FWOM YOUW GWWWAAAAAVE!" whimpers Elmer Fudd/Zeus. Yeah I love that game. Like an Ed Wood movie, it's so bad it's good!
And did anyone else think Revenge of Shinobi was really overrated?
