first thing's first. i am new here. i've loved fighting games and neogeo goodness for as long as i can remember, and am amazed to find a site like this. the reviews are grand, though i'm curious as to what you make of kof2003? i personally think its one of the best in the series, second only to '98. though that is my humble opinion, mind.as for the thread, i remember playing in poland of all places, a game called "franco's crazy revenge" on the amiga. such a bad experience almost made me want to take life. has anyone else heard of it?
as for the music debate i'd probaby say kof'95 had the best score. since its the only fighting game soundtrack where the composers have really put some thought into the actual instrumentation of the pieces in order to enhance the backgrouds in general. something that becomes apparent when you think about the sound of the lone cello in the art of fighting teams' stage and the upbeat funk on kyo's background.
after that would come the soundtrack to the last blade games for pretty much the same reason.
as for capcom's music. for me its always been a bit boring and samey by comparison. as in virtually every game i've played it just boils down to small collection of catchy melodies done with a limited range of sounds. in other words game music being made in exactly the same way as it has done since the 80's.
Welcome to the forums and great first post
I haven't reviewed KOF 2003 yet I know, but I do personally find the game to be very good. In my opinion it's the first time since 99/2000 that a KOF release has felt like a properly developed game and not something that was slapped together in a cut and paste fashion. KOF 2001 was ok gameplay wise but had HORRID music and gfx which really spoilt the atmosphere, and 2002 is good but over a period of time I started to tire of it, whereas I have never truly tired of games like KOF 98. But anyways, 2003 feels like a "proper" game and one that had some thought put into it, and it also has some great music and new characters as well as good fun gameplay (even if it isn't perfect)... definitely one of the best KOF's I think
KOF 95 did have some great music yeah, and I'm a massive fan of the old school KOF's (pre 96). The old SNK sure knew how to make great video game music (while the new SNKP seems to be learning at last), but I agree partially on what you said about Capcom. As I said earlier in the thread, old Capcom music is fantastic imho (SF2/SSF2, Darkstalkers etc), but their newer stuff is horrid mostly. I think everything went downhill round about the time of MVC2, but they still occasionally surprise us with some good tracks. They must of lost their old composers though, as nothing these days really touches the best stuff from Capcoms older games if you ask me.
Franco's crazy revenge huh? Sounds familiar, but I don't think I ever had that one for my Amiga... guess I was lucky?
