You need a stick to play 3rd Strike properly. 
Your thumbs can't move quick enough over all those buttons, and then there's the nuisance of negative edge in Capcom fighting games, (if you hold down the button and let go it doesn't count as you pressing the button once, but twice ... only really noticeable when doing a combo, but can get frustrating when the wrong move comes out and leaves you floundering in the air ready for the kill).
