2001 is decent gameplay wise (I know people that swear by it too), it's just a shame that they screwed up the look of the game so bad. Gameplay is always more important thn anything else, but the gfx really are an eyesore at times in that game (NASTY backgrounds), and then there's the small matter of the music... which makes my ears bleed most of the time.
The PS2 version looks a little better, shame they didn't do at least *something* with the music though
