NGPC Game Problem

Hi

I bought a used NGPC recently, and SNK Vs. Capcom: Match of the Milennium. When I play it, everything works fine, except there are no health bars at the top for the characters! I've cleaned the cartridge with alcohol thoroughly. Does anyone know if this is a factory defect? Should I return it?
