This is from the KOF 10th Anniversary site, before you get too excited bear in mind it's just a mock up of the original Orochi battle from one of SNK's main sprite artists (I think that is who he is, I'm just going off what Fygee from neo-geo.com said but I think that's right):
God dammit... can you imagine if they did a remake of KOF '97 with it looking like that, or indeed if the KOF series moved to having gfx like that in the future. It would take an horrendously long time and lots of work to do it, but we can dream I guess ;D.
edit: hmmm, I just thought... I can't remember the exact origins of the whole Orochi battle etc, but how about SNK doing a KOF-Zero set in the past (maybe a better name though, lol
) that centered around that original battle? Could be an idea for an interesting side-project
